    Brooks Saddles

    Brooks Saddles

Brooks England's beginnings pretty much coincide with the birth of the modern day bicycle in the 1860's. John Boultbee Brooks, legend would have you believe got in the saddle making business after a friend loaned him a bike. He found the saddle very uncomfortable and the rest is history. The company has been bought and sold several times, but production methods and materials have remained pretty much the same for their entire lifetime. In 1882, the company's patent drawings for a bike saddle look almost identical to today's Brooks saddles.

Brooks is virtually synonymous with leather bicycle saddles. The legendary B-17 is probably the best known of their timeless creations, making its first appearance sometime around 1898. Its comfort and appearance, especially the natural dies and finishes are touted and extolled by aficionados. It's probably the saddle of last resort when it comes to riders looking for a comfort choice after trying all the other more modern plastic/carbon/gel offerings.

Brooks saddles are unique in a few areas. Most Brooks models have saddlebag loops. This makes it easier to attach certain saddle bags, especially the vaunted offerings of Carradice. Leather saddles are not waterproof and require some care. If you live in a rainy climate and ride in the rain, you'll want to get a saddle cover. And, lastly, leather saddles require some "break in" period. Sometimes a saddle is comfortable "out of the box." Other saddles will require more time. Judicious use of a special leather dressing called Brooks Proofide is in order during this period. Also, best to use generous amounts of "chamois cream" while breaking in a leather saddle.

    Chrome Bags

    Chrome Bags

The thing about Chrome is that once you get hooked on their products, there's no turning back. We're big fans here, mostly because their products are so darn durable. Crash and rash aside, their products just keep rolling like nuthin' even happened. Nifty design details and hi-tech fabrics make the useful indispensable.

Chrome began in Boulder, Colorado in 1996. After a stint in Denver, the company settled down in San Francisco. The founders were a group of cyclists using cycling bags but not finding anything available that really met their standards and manifesto: functionality, utility, and durability. They're best known for their chrome plated "seatbelt" buckles on their messenger bags.
Once they started making urban cycling clothing, they became preeminent in the cycling niche. One of the coolest aspects of Chrome products is that they still make most of their products in the U.S. If you ever get the chance to watch one of their craftspeople make a product in person, take the time. It's fascinating to watch and they really know their stuff.

While their apparel is highly functional, it still resonates with an urban hip flavor. Yeah, it's iconic now, but it's still cool. How do they do that?

    Crumpler Bags

Get this, his grandma actually helped him with the first prototype and loaned him her sewing machine.

Crumpler has always found a way to make their bags work, usually through trial and error, but the finished product is always something that will last you a lifetime. Check out their line, the cool names and colors are just a start for these uber cool bags.
