As an avid commuter and recreational/distance rider, I don't know how I ever got along without these panniers. They're marvelously well-designed: easy no-tools mounting, clever and secure attachment, completely waterproof, and very sturdy. I've used messenger bags for a few years and finally having the load off my back has been great. I feel much more able to do most of my moving around the city by bike when I can carry 99% of the things I need in a pair of Ortliebs. The huge reflective patches on both sides of the bags increase my visibility as well. New for this year are pockets inside each bag for smaller items, which is really helpful.
I've use these bags to commute to work, going the grocery store (I do all of my shopping with them-- a 15 lb. box of cat litter fits perfectly in one bag), for picnics, for carrying plants home from the nursery (tomato plants love how warm and humid the bags keep them), for carrying heavy tools, on frequent overnight trips, and any variety of other tasks that'd otherwise require the use of a car. I'm committed to a car-light lifestyle and these bags turn good intentions into positive action.

I love these panniers! I used them for a weekend tour on the C&O Canal in the rain and mud. Nothing inside got wet and because they are so waterproof, I could hose the mud off before opening them. I also love that the shoulder straps stay on them all the time making it easy to unload my bike. Great panniers.

I purchased a set of front and back classics this summer for a tour to Ottawa area from Rochester NY in October and for two of the days I was blessed with heavy rain along with strong winds. Not a bit of moisture got inside the bags and I loved the ease with which they go on and off my racks. I like the strength of construction and feel they are a great value.
