Cycling in the City

A lightweight, waterproof bag that you can also put on your bike! The City Biker Commuter Pannier utilizes the upper QL-2 system or the QL3 system for biking, and also acts as a great vertical, messenger style bag. The hook system is removable for added comfort when you are using the City Biker as a sling-style bag. And for easy convertibility, the lid includes a Velcro strap which secures the shoulder strap safely inside the bag while biking.

The large main compartment can accommodate a laptop which is 13.3" wide. Check out the Ortlieb Notebook Inserts for additional laptop protection. The two inner zipper pockets offer organization, and the reinforced bottom gives added protection against daily wear and tear. I love this bag so much that after having one for a few weeks, I bought a second so that I can keep one packed for work (computer and accessories) and one ready for shopping, errands and overnights. SIZE It is a bit on the small side capacity-wise, but I've been able to adjust what I carry routinely and I'm now finding it just fine. Externally, the small size works very well on my petite bike - I have trouble with heel clearance on most other bags. ORGANIZATION It has a single inside zippered pocket (~6"x10") and key-clip which is nice for slipping the wallet and phone in and out. I combined it with the Ortlieb computer insert, which, to my surprise, has a number of pen and organizing pockets. It's a great combination for me: the office essentials are packed in the insert, so it is easy to remember everything between pannier and backpack when I change mode of travel - I just transfer the insert. MOUNTING ON THE BIKE The QL3 system is fantastic - quick one-handed on/off. it feels very securely locked on and easy to click into place. SHOULDER STRAP AND INTERIOR ACCESS The shoulder strap is strong and feels securely attached to the bag. Note that the strap to secure it for riding is *inside* the flap - it's not the thing you see on the outside, that's just a visual design and serves no functional purpose. But it's very easy to lift the flap and secure the strap. It's also very easy to get access to bag contents while it is mounted on the bike. The flap is large, so you have to reach around it if you're carrying it on your shoulder, but it's not onerous and a small price to pay for keeping contents dry. OVERALL Really, the only modifications I would want are another inch or so width and a mid-sized external pocket. ALSO TRIED - Bikesmart Messenger pannier (too wide, not waterproof, mediocre organization) - their Office bag appears to be out of production - Ortlieb Downtown (nice, but it's a suitcase! I could travel for a week in it!)

All in all, I'm pretty disappointed. Bad points: * the hooks that lock onto the rack are finnicky. A couple times it's seemed locked on when it wasn't. * because it only locks onto the rack at the top, the bag kind of bangs against the side of the bike when I hit a big bump. It really should lock on at the bottom as well. Good points: * seems very well built, I gotta say. * looks nice, too. I figured I'd splurge on this pannier to avoid the headaches of a cheaper model. Instead I got a few headaches, along with the higher pricetag.
